In 2019, a project was started to research the history of the Luftwaffe airfield and the material culture left behind by the German soldiers. The project is led by archaeologist Teemu Väisänen in close cooperation with Satakunta Museum and Pori adult education centre.
The project includes archaeological excavations and field surveys, archival work, interviews and public outreach to involve locals and students with the history of their surroundings. The first archaeological excavations are to be conducted in fall 2020, and excavations are continued for multiple years. Research culminates in an exhibition at Satakunta Museum along with a publication of the results.
The project is supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, which funds the public outreach in form of a field school and lectures offered for local high school students.
